The government plans envisage that from 2008 children aged 16 and over will have to have their fingerprints taken to get a passport. It is also considering taking fingerprints from 11 to 15 year olds. In the EU the UK government has argued that children of 5 years of age and above should be fingerprinted for visas as should the children of resident third country nationals. As yet no EU standard has been set for the new biometric passports.
