"Greece has moved almost 400 migrants from the island of Lesbos to the mainland, as part of its efforts to ease overcrowding in its refugee camps amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The migrants arrived at the port of Piraeus on Monday morning.
Authorities last month announced plans to gradually transfer 2,380 asylum seekers and their families from the islands to mainland facilities after Orthodox Easter on April 19.
Nearly 37,000 people are currently hosted in camps on the Greek islands, while Lesbos alone accommodates almost 19,000 people in a space designed for about 3,000.
According to Greece’s Minister of Migration and Asylum Notis Mitarachi, in the first quarter of 2020, some 10,000 migrants were moved from the islands’ camps to the mainland."
