Acquitted Kurdish refugees to sue police
artdoc May=1991

Four Kurdish refugees, arrested following a demonstration outside Becton
Fashions in Hackney in February have been acquitted at Snaresbrook Crown
Court on charges of riotous behaviour and actual bodily harm. They are
now planning to sue the police for a variety of injuries suffered when
they were arrested.
The arrests occurred when the four, who were in the Halkevi Turkish
Community Centre in the same building as Becton Fashion, rushed out to
see what happened when the demonstration was confronted by 16 officers
from Bow's Territorial Support Group. The arrests appear to have been
the result of a random swoop on everyone in the area at the time. The
Hackney Trade Union Support Centre also claims that the Special Branch
had been involved in the case throughout. (City Limits 18-25.10.90)
