Anti-semitic attacks increase
artdoc April=1992

A delegation of Jewish `elders', including representatives of the
British Board of Jewish Deputies, have been to see the Home
Secretary about anti-semitic attacks, particularly attacks on
Jewish cemeteries in Manchester, Leeds, Staines and London.
Attacks have included the daubing of swastikas and racial
slurs around the Gladstone Park Memorial, Dollis Hill; Ã30,000
worth of damage at a cemetery in Edmonton; 74 graves damaged at
Manchester and the desecration of a Jewish cemetery at Willesden.
There has been some criticism of the police response. (Times
15.8.90 and 29.8.90; Independent 18.8.90, 24.8.90 and 29.8.90)
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan police, releasing crime figures
for the second quarter of 1990, have expressed concern over the
rising number of attacks on Jewish targets. In one of the worst
incidents a group of 60 Jewish school children were attacked
outside a school gate, and there were 27 attacks against Jews
recorded in the whole period. (Guardian 15.8.90)
