A group of IRA prisoners at Whitemoor prison, Cambridgeshire, have claimed that they were severely beaten by prison officers following their recapture after an escape attempt during September. It is understood that four of the men are considering taking legal action against the prison officers.

The governor of the prison has asked the Cambridgeshire constabulary to investigate the allegations. Following the escape attempt Semtex explosive was found at the top-security wing of the prison, leading to calls for Home Secretary Michael Howard to resign.
