Haider launches `Austria First' petition

Jorg Haider, leader of the far-Right Freedom Party, has launched
a 12-point `Austria First' petition against foreigners,
demanding, amongst other things, a halt to all immigration. (See
Bulletin no.1). According to an opinion poll published in mid-
January's News magazine, over 800,000 Austrians are prepared to
sign the petition.
The growth of the Freedom Party - now Austria's third largest
party, with the support of around 15 per cent of the population -
has led to opposition from the Church. The Austrian Bishops'
Conference - the highest body of the country's church - has
produced a pamphlet, distributed after Sunday mass, outlining ten
reasons not to vote for Haider's petition.
The weekend before Haider was due to start collecting names for
his petition, up to a hundred thousand people marched in Vienna
against racism (Independent 23.11.92, 23.1.93; Jewish Chronicle
15.1.93).
