JOURNAL ARTICLE , User Ref = 82-3286
D CAMPBELL
NEW STATESMAN, 17 SEPO 1982 104 (2687) PP6-9

EXAMINES THE UNREALISTIC HYPOTHESIS UPON WHICH THE HOME OFFICE'S
ABORTIVE HARD ROCK CIVIL DEFENCE EXERCISE WAS BASED - THAT IN A
NUCLEAR WAR ALMOST NO MAJOR BRITISH CITY, UNITED STATES MILITARY
BASE OR MAJOR STRATEGIC MILITARY TARGET WOULD BE HIT - AND
DESCRIBES THE TIMETABLE OF EVENTS PROJECTED BY THE EXERCISE.
COMPUTER ANALYSIS CONDUCTED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE AND
THE OPEN UNIVERSITY HAS SUGGESTED THAT EVEN THE LIMITED NUCLEAR
ATTACK POSTULATED WOULD CAUSE 12 MILLION DEATHS OR SEVERE
INJURIES.
