Belgium: Algerian man beaten
artdoc April=1993

A 24-year-old Algerian man has suffered injuries, including the
fracture of two cervical vertebrae, following an incident with
the Brussels police which actually started after he phoned them
to ask for assistance after a minor car accident When the local
police arrived on the scene, following the man's telephone call,
they immediately asked to see his identity papers. After an
argument, during which the man phoned the gendarmerie to complain
about the local police's attitude, police reinforcements arrived
and, it is alleged, handcuffed the Algerian man and threw him
into the back of a police van, where they beat him.So bad were
his injuries that the police were forced to take him to
hospital. They told the doctor that he had been in a car accident
(Solidaire 2.2.93).
