Reviews `London Under Attack', the report of the Greater London
Area War Risk Study, with particular reference to the contribution
by Earth Resources Research . This examined the impact of various
levels of nuclear attack on the built environment, and the
viability of civil defence measures designed to protect both
buildings and the population using their homes as
fallout shelters. Concludes that, even under the lightest
conceivable attack, up to 20% of the housing stock would be
destroyed and a further 5% to 12% seriously damaged. Very few
dwellings could offer an adequate degree of protection against
radiation or provide shelter for survivors of an attack. 2
