"The first part of this book examines the origins of collective
security by looking at some of the aspects of political behaviour
of
both individuals and states. It also traces the evolution of
structural attempts to give meaning to the concept leading to an
account of the present regional alliance system in Europe which,
in
the authors' view, comes nearest to a workable arrangement given
the
realities of the world as it is. The book also contains a
case-history of British foreign policy since 1945, with special
reference to Great Britain's attempts to seek national security
within a collective framework. The case-history analyses the
current
sets of negotiations - the Conference on Security and
Co-operation in
Europe, Mutual Force Reduction, and the Strategic Arms Limitation
Talks - which may lead to the establishment of a more general
European security system." (Publishers text)
