Discusses popular causal explanations for the Toxteth
riots in 1981 and compares them with information derived
from police arrest statistics. The social class and
age distribution of arrests suggests that the riot was an
exceptional event involving normally law abiding citizens
from the area who felt themselves increasingly isolated
and under threat from coercive policing. 10 references
