Republicans send open invitation to Zhirinovsky

The far-Right Assembly for the Republic-Czechoslovak Republican
Party (SPR-RSC) has sent an open invitation to Russia's Vladimir
Zhirinovsky to visit the Czech Republic. Spokesman Jan Vik said
that ZhirinovskyØs visit would help provide `objective
information about the programme and goals of Zhirinovsky's
Liberal Democratic Party'. Interviewed in the Czech daily
newspaper, Lidova Noviny, Zhirinovksy said he would be glad to
visit the Czech Republic which would be in need of Russia's
leadership in the coming years. `Your country is dying. I assure
you that in 10 years, there will be no Moravia, no Sudetenlands..
Havel will die in 10 years and young Czechs will curse him. They
will be forced to speak German, to forget their native language,
to go to German churches and to polish the shoes of German
officials' (Prognosis 18.2-3.3.94).

Skinhead violence on the metro

A 17-year-old girl, whose boyfriend Filip Venclk was murdered by
skinheads on the metro in `93, has herself become the victim of
a vicious attack by a group of 15-20 skinheads, again on the
metro. The skinheads dragged her friend into their metro car and
savagely beat him. When Eva tried to intervene, they kicked her
in the face, knocking out her front tooth and loosening four
others so severely that the dentist says they will probably soon
fall out. According to the police, random attacks by skinheads
on the metro are becoming a regular phenomenon (Prognosis
18.2-3.3.94).

Prague police prejudiced against Romany

Research by the Interior Ministry suggests a higher rate of
animosity towards Romanies among officers of the Prague city
police and trainee officers than among high school students. The
ministry is recommending the introduction of special courses on
ethnic minorities to `increase mutual understanding' (Prague Post
16-22.2.94).
