DC wins damages against Asian JP
artdoc June=1991

A Glasgow court has awarded;¼5,000 in defamation damages to a
Strathclyde DC who had been accused of racial prejudice after
he arrested a Glasgow justice of the peace for receiving stolen
TV sets. Handing down his judgment, Lord Marnoch said that JP
Mohammed Mirza had `flatly contradicted himself on a number of
occasions.'
In January 1984 DC Leslie Fraser charged Mr. Mirza with
receiving stolen goods. Mr. Mirza was later found not guilty
at Glasgow Sheriff Court but wrote a letter of complaint to
Strathclyde's chief constable, Andrew Sloan, six months after
the trial accusing DC Fraser of overstepping his duties as an
officer, threatening witnesses in the case and being `after
[his] name, job, [his] colour and justice of the Peace.'
Lord Marnoch based his judgment on DC Fraser's claim that
Mr. Mirza had slandered his name by alleging the arrest was the
result of racial prejudice. The Scottish Police Federation
provided the funds for DC Fraser's case. (Police Review
