DPP investigates death in custody
artdoc July=1991

An inquiry has been launched by Middlesborough police into
the death of a 30 year-old black man in police custody.
Oliver Pryce was arrested by Middlesborough police for
alleged violent behaviour. After the publicity surrounding
his death in police custody, several witnesses came forward
to testify that the police had behaved brutally towards him
when he was arrested. An independent investigation by a
medical examiner has ruled that Pryce died of asphyxiation.
A police report on the death has been sent to the Director
of Public Prosecutions for review. (Voice 29.1.91)
Meanwhile, a young black Walthamstow mechanic, James
Roberts, died in January from injuries he received in a
crash on New Years Eve after the car he was driving was
chased by police. An inquest is to be held shortly.
