The Regional Policy Committee of the European Parliament is
considering a report on the effect of abolishing internal borders
in the EC from 1 January 1993. The report says that one of the
sectors most at risk is customs officers with an estimated 62,000
jobs likely to disappear; 15,200 in France, 3,300 in the UK and
1,100 in Ireland. The European Commission has put forward a
budget of 30 million ECU (Ã1 - 75 ECUs approx.) to retrain
