I have chosen in this book to look at the treatment of women in
British justice as a paradigm of the faults and blindness of the
legal system as a whole. Women are not a minority in society,
even if they are a minority in the courtroom. Yet their treatment
is constantly determined by the degree to which they conform to
a non-legal mythology shared by judges, lawyers and jurors alike,
sometimes regardless of their sex.
