France: Moroccan youth killed by police
artdoc March=1993

Twenty-two-year-old Mohammed Bahir has been shot dead by police
in the Vaulx-en-Velin suburb, near Lyon, allegedly whilst driving
a stolen car. Following the killing, 200 youths stoned a police
station and pitched battles between police and arab youth lasted
for three nights. (Independent 12.10.92; Monde 13.10.92)

Police break up Vincennes camp

On 29 October, over 700 police officers, including the CRS riot
squad, broke up a camp of homeless Africans at Vincennes,
south-east of Paris. Three hundred and twelve families have now
been resettled, many in decaying hostels on the outskirts of
Paris.
Ten days before the police operation, on 19 October, the Front
National had protested against the camp outside the Ministry of
Towns and accused the government of privileging the Malians for
housing! Jean Yves Le Gallou, the president of the FN group in
the regional council of the lie de France, promised that the
demonstrations will continue until the government removes the
families. Following the dispersal of the families, it is rumoured
that anti-resettlement committees have been set up in the towns
where temporary lodging was provided. (Liberation 20.10.92;
Guardian 30.10.92; 2.11.92; CARF No 11, November/December 92).
