Germany:Maltreatment in custody
artdoc April=1993

German Public Television (ZDF-Kennzeichen D) has highlighted six
cases since December 1991 which involve allegations of racism at
Berlin's police stations. In one incident, a Tamil refugee was
picked up for no apparent reason, and racially abused at the
police station where his head was hit against a table. In another
case, a man from Iran was beaten by police officers and called
a `Jewish bastard' (Die Tageszeitung 10.3.93).
Meanwhile, the Committee of Foreigners in Glessen says that
they have documented thirty incidents in which the railway police
have racially abused and maltreated foreigners at the town's main
train station (Konkret 3.3.93).

Death in police custody

A Romanian refugee, Lorin Ladu, was shot and killed at a police
station in Strassfurt, Sachsen-Anhalt. The police officer who
shot him has been suspended and is being investigated by the
public prosecutor's office for `negligent killing' (Die
Tageszeitung 22.1.93).
