Greece: Crackdown on `illegals'
artdoc April=1993

Hundreds of Albanians have been expelled from Greece following
a crackdown on an estimated 500,000 `illegal aliens' blamed for
an increase in crime. Previously,Greece's public order minister
had released crime statistics that implied that Albanians were
responsible for more crime than any other `foreigner' group, and
that crimes by Albanians rose 185 per cent in 1992 compared with
1991. Other foreigners were credited with causing 13.2 percent
more crimes in 1992 than the year before (Guardian 3.2.93,
8.2.93).
