Declining public confidence in the police following the riots
and public disorder of the 1980s has led to a change in attitude
and many forces now have sophisticated public relations policies.
Argues that the concentration on educational attainment as a
major criterion in recruitment should be modified in favour of
an approach which also emphasises social skills and maturity. The
recruitment age should be raised to 21, there should be no
minimum educational qualification, and the entrance examination
should reflect the communication skills required in police work.
There should also be some element of psychological attitude
testing during interview, and the inclusion of lay members on
interview panels. In service training should be modified to
reduce militaristic overtones and the emphasis on law
enforcement. 13 references .
