Inquest -unlawful killing' verdict
artdoc June=1991

An inquest has returned a verdict of `unlawful killing' on
77-year-old May Bartlett who died after her car was rammed by
police during a high-speed car chase.
PC Michael Burton admitted that the car chase began when
he decided to stop a Ford Cortina because `the two people in
the car were quite scruffily dressed and it is a car commonly
used in crime'. He had not switched on his emergency warning
lights or siren throughout the chase because there was not much
traffic on the road and `the driver would have realised I
wanted him to stop if I put them on.'
The CPS is not pressing charges and no decision has yet
been made as to whether the police driver will face an internal
disciplinary hearing. (Hackney Gazette 8.2.91)
Meanwhile, a police inquiry is to be held into the deaths
of Robert Cheetham and Clare Robinson who, in a separate
incident, were run over by a stolen car the police were
following. (Independent 22.2.91)
