The Local Government Bill provides for abolition of the
police committees in the metropolitan counties and for their
replacement by joint authorities made up of district council
members and magistrates. Concern is expressed at the lack
of financial control of police forces by these new
authorities for at least the first three years, and at the
composition of their membership - suggests chosen councillors
will be poor quality and primarily concerned with district
level interests, and that magistrates' political
independence will be compromised.
