Despite last minute pleas for donations to help pay off an
outstanding debt to the local council of ¼76,000, Notting
Hill's Mangrove Community Association was recently auctioned
off to a local restaurateur for ¼277,000. According to new
owner Simon Rose, the former meeting place for community
activists is going to be converted into a `lively, reasonably
priced local restaurant for local people.'
Meanwhile, former co-owner of the Mangrove, Victor
Crichlow, has been acquitted of 12 counts of fraud by local
authorities who accused him of swindling over ¼88,000 when he
served as the treasurer of Notting Hill's 1988 Carnival. A
little more than a year ago, Victor's brother Frank was
acquitted of charges of drug dealing. The Crichlows are now
looking for a new property to re-open the Mangrove Community
Association. (Voice 19.2.91; Independent 25.2.91; Guardian
