Mangrove closure blamed on police operations
artdoc July=1991
Frequent police raids, surveillance and harassment of
customers, which caused an irreparable downturn in business,
has led to the closure of the Mangrove Community Centre in
West London says its owner Frank Crichlow, As one of the
only West Indian owned and operated community centres in the
country, the Mangrove was an important meeting place for
organising against racial harassment. The centre had
weathered several attempts to close it down, but this time
an outstanding mortgage debt of ¼30,000 caused the council
to issue a possession order. A local security firm and
several police officers closed the centre by changing the
locks and boarding it up. (Caribbean Times 29.1.91)
