Metropolitan police to pay record damages
artdoc July=1991

A record ¼114,215 damages against the Metropolitan police has
been awarded to a former airport worker for false arrest and
imprisonment.
Fred Nugent, aged 46, of Feltham, Middlesex spent one
year in prison on remand for allegedly participating in the
1985 robbery on Trans Mediterranean Airways before he was
acquitted at the Old Bailey.
Because of the paucity of material evidence and doubts
about the confessions's authenticity, the jury awarded Mr
Nugent an added ¼37,500 in exemplary damages. (Guardian
