Administrative divisions: 4 quarters (quartiers,
singular--quartier)

Constitution: 17 December 1962

Legal system: based on French law; has not accepted compulsory
ICJ jurisdiction

Executive branch: prince, minister of state, Council of
Government (cabinet)

Legislative branch: National Council (Conseil National)

Judicial branch: Supreme Tribunal (Tribunal Supreme)

Police structures

Monaco has an independent police force, the Sûreté Publique de
Monaco, which numbered 236 policemen and inspectors in 1989
(Hazenberg en Mulschlegel 1992). It consists of the Direction de
Sûreté Publique and the sections Publice Urbaine, Police
Judiciaire, Police Administrative and Police Maritime. The Police
Urbaine has Intervention, Support and Traffic Brigades. The
judicial police is also organised into Brigades, and is in charge
of criminal investigation and internal security. Kurian (1989:
519-520) reports that there is also a section Women Police. All
uniformed personnel carry a .38 revolver, detectives prefer a
Walther 7.65 mm.
