Campaign formed to stop extradition to Turkey

A Committee has been formed to protest against the threatened
deportation of Namdar Karaman, a member of Devrimci Sol, to
Turkey.
Namdar Karaman was arrested in January after police carried out
a series of raids on people suspected of extortion of Turkish
businessmen. At the time, there was criticism of police methods
in carrying out the raids, which resulted in eight arrests.
Suspects, it is alleged, were blindfolded and one woman had a
miscarriage as a direct result of a police raid.
Having served his sentence, Karaman was immediately picked up
by the police and held in protective custody pending deportation.
According to the Committee, an application previously made by the
Dev Sol member for political asylum was turned down owing to
serious procedural errors by his lawyer. It was this that allowed
the Dutch authorities to make contact with the Turkish
authorities and make arrangements for Karaman's extradition (NN
23.9.94).

Conditions in Willem II prison deteriorate

There have been numerous incidents involving stateless prisoners
held in the Willem II prison in Tilburg. Conditions in the prison
seem to be deteriorating with prisoners held four to a cell (De
Volkskrant 8.9.94).
