Netherlands: Computers on the buses
artdoc August=1992

The Municipal public transport service in Amsterdam will shortly
start an experiment with pocket computers to counter fare
dodging. The pocket computer will contain all the address
information from the telephone directory on a CD-ROM disk. Thus
the ticket inspector can immediately check a fare dodger's name,
house number and zip code (which in Holland covers about 15
addresses). If the supplied information doesn't match with the
database, the dodger is required to show a passport or similar
document to verify the information. In case this doesn't satisfy
the inspector either, the person will escorted to a police
station. In anticipation of this experiment, the inspectors now
carry portable telephone sets enabling them to check with the
Public Register.
