Rotterdam city council is planning to house up to 300 asylum seekers in privately rented accommodation. It is the first time asylum seekers will be housed in this fashion. The plan has been devised by the Centraal Opvangorgaan Asielzoekers (Centre for the Accommodation of Asylum Seekers) which is suffering from a shortage of suitable housing. The eventual aim of the government is, however, to encourage asylum seekers to rely on "self-help", encouraging them to find their own accommodation through family or friends - this should halve the cost of housing asylum seekers. The plan has come under sustained criticism from both local councils as well as lawyers and support groups.
