Netherlands: Dutch industry fears

The Netherlands defence industry is concerned that its involvement in a planned Dutch army procurement of up to 500 armoured infantry fighting vehicles will suffer because Holland is not a member of a new European armaments agency. The new agency, Organisation de Cooperation Conjointe en Matiere d'Armement (OCCAR), was formed by France, Germany, Italy and the UK in November 1996. The Netherlands was excluded because there was no common programme in which the country was participating. According to Hans Dibbetz, director of the Netherlands defence industry lobby (NIID), the exclusion was designed to point out that the Dutch have not focused sufficiently on "buying European".
