Newham: Mr Govindan acquitted
artdoc June=1991

Mr Padmanabhan Govindan has been cleared of all assault charges
made against him by the police after a key witness failed to
turn up at Stratford Magistrates Court. The witness is alleged
to be the leader of the gang that attacked Mr Govindan last
June. During the attack, Mr Govindan called in the police for
protection but the police ended up arresting him instead.
Since the charges have been dropped, Mr Govindan, who has
been supported by the Newham Monitoring Project, has vowed to
bring his attackers to justice. But he also wants to know why
the police singled him out, `My conscience tells me that the
police behaved worse than the original attackers. They should
have defended me, but they abused me.' (Eastern Eye 26.2.91)
