a writer about spies and intelligence affairs but his first and
abiding love has been for the British countryside......

It was mainly through his country life and especially through
shooting and fishing, that he met the high level contacts,
particulary in the fields of intelligence and defence, who
supplied him with the secret information which so exasperated his
Fleet Street literary rivals. His country friendships with Lord
Beaverbrook, Sir Thomas Sopwith, Lord Mountbatten, Sir Joseph
