South Yorkshire has deferred its plans to get rid of its police
horses and cut the number of police dogs by half until after a
meeting between the police authority chairman and Leon Brittan,
Home Secretary next week. Also report that Chief Constables
ordered by local police authorities to save money by cutting
resources can challenge the decision if they believe it stops
essential operations.
