Police challenge damages award
artdoc April=1992

The Metropolitan police are attempting to overturn a damages
award of Ã40,050 given to Mr. Leonard Lawrance, who is white, for
assault and malicious prosecution. The case is being taken to the
Court of Appeal on the grounds that there is new information.
But, according to the Guardian (23.8.90), this amounts to the
evidence of a `self-confessed perjurer', a man who gave evidence
at Mr. Leonard's 1985 trial which he now claims to be lies. The
police have received an assurance from the Director of Public
Prosecutions that the witness will not be prosecuted.
