Discusses the role of social workers acting as `appropriate
adults' in police interviews with children and other vulnerable
groups, which arose out of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act
1986. Expresses concern that the codes of practice covering the
conduct of the interviews are inadequate, and considers there is
a need for more data on the way in which the Act is being
implemented.
