The difficulties involved in policing an area with an
allegedly high level of robbery and violent theft are examined
using data from a study comparing the incidence of such crimes
in Brixton and its surrounding police district. The figures do
not suggest that Brixton is unusually criminal and it is argued
that some of the trouble resulting from the SWAMP exercise was
in the nature of a self-fulfilling prophecy put forward
by police who saw Brixton as a special case.
