Más de 3.000 policías vigilan al alumnado {Over 3,000 policemen surveil the student body}, Laura Corcuera. Diagonal, 2-15 February 2006, p.41. In response to an increase in drug consumption by minors, the "Plan for a Police Response to prevent and combat drug consumption in a school environment" came into force on 10 January. It involves the deployment of 3,124 officers from the Guardia Civil and National Police for surveillance activities around schools, during breaks, out-of-school activities and at the end of the school day. Police officers, who may be in plainclothes, will be able to bring charges against pupils caught in the area surrounding the school. The plan will be accompanied by a plan to surveil areas in which leisure activities take place, for which a "map of specific threat points" has been drawn up.
