Lord Mackay, the Lord Chancellor, is going ahead with his cuts
to legal aid eligibility, in force from 12 April 1993, despite
the Law Society being granted leave in the High Court to
challenge the new regulations. There has been widespread anger
at Lord Mackay's cavalier attitude to criticism of the cuts, and
at the ruthlessness of the new rules, which reduce to Ã61 per
week the level of disposable income at which legal advice will
be available. The Home Affairs Select Committee complained that
the cuts `sit uneasily with the government's commitment to
citizens' rights'. Independent 23.3.93, 1, 8.4.93.
