Mr. Nellist: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home
Department how many places are currently provided in Her
Majesty's prisons; and what is the total prison population at the
latest convenient date.
Mrs. Rumbold: The uncrowded capacity of the prison estate
in England and Wales on Friday 14 December 1990 was 44,346, but
this figure includes accommodation temporarily taken out of use
for refurbishment. The prison population on the same date was
44,911, including 674 prisoners held in police cells.
