Prison suicides increase

The number of prison suicides rose to forty-six in 1993; this
figure is five more than in 1992 and marks a return to the high
prison suicide rates of the late 1980s. The figure has increased
despite the introduction of Prison Service prevention programmes.
In Moorlands Prison, a young offenders institution in south
Yorkshire, two teenagers have been found hanged in their cells
within three days. The two suicides are the first of the new
