PUBLIC REACTIONS TO POLICE BEHAVIOUR: SOME FINDINGS OF THE
BRITISH CRIME SURVEY

An examination of the responses of 6,000 people to contacts
with the police suggests that an overriding factor is often
the attitude of the police officer rather than the substance
of his actions. A helpful or sympathetic approach can do
much to improve relationships even when the police can do little
to help, while a high-handed attitude or unwillingness to admit
mistakes can seriously damage them. 10 references
