Rotherhithe residents deny racism
artdoc May=1991

A Housing Estate Action Group says that attacks on black people on a
south-east London housing estate `have nothing to do with race'. But
black families say that swastikas and NF initials have been sprayed and
carved onto the walls and doors of the estate. Southwark council has
posted private guards to watch over black households on the estate and
council housing chief Mark Howorth says that he has asked police to be
especially alert.
Members of the Cherry Gardens Action Group in Rotherhithe have
defended their campaign to secure affordable housing for `locals only' -
they say this campaign has nothing to do with racism. However, at a
public meeting, several members of the Action Group complained that they
wanted `no blacks or Pakis' on the estate. (Caribbean Times 30.10.90)
