Aids test for foreigners to be made compulsory

The Russian parliament has voted overwhelmingly to compel all
foreigners to take an Aids test and to expel all those who test
positive for the HIV virus. The new bill will not become law
until it is passed by the upper house and then signed by the
president (Guardian 29.10.94).

Zhirinovsky alliance with Frey points to plans for Greater
Germany

The leader of Germany's far-right DVU Party, Dr.Gerhard Frey, has
launched a book in German about Vladimir Zhirinovsky, entitled
`What I really want.' The back cover of the book shows maps of
eastern Europe being swallowed up by Germany and the two men make
no secret of their desire to redraw the map of Europe, mainly at
Poland's expense.
Frey also donated £83,000 to Zhirinovsky in order to buy free
food for invalid pensioners and sick children in Mr Zhirinovsky's
constituency. The two men presided at a special ceremony in
Shcholkovo, north-east of Moscow, where carrier bags laden with
tins and jars and a copy of Zhirinovsky's party newspaper `Truth'
were doled out. `We understand that one packet of food won't
change your life radically, but this act is a sign of gratitude
to the voters of our party' said Mr. Zhirinovsky (Guardian
9.8.94).

Neo-fascist stands in parliamentary by-election

The neo-fascist Alexander Fyodorov, of the Russian National Unity
Party, stood in a parliamentary by-election in Khimki, a
satellite town between Moscow and the city's international
airport (Guardian 31.10.94).
