On 26 October the Schengen Agreement came into force in Italy and Austria. While passport controls at Italian airports have been abolished for citizens of Schengen member states, controls at border check points and sea ports will be abolished by 30 March 1998. Greece joined the system in early December but demands that all applications for a Schengen visa by Turkish citizens should be subject to Greek approval could disrupt the scheme. It could further interfere with the EU-Turkey customs union and is likely to inflame relations with Turkey.
