Stonehenge action begins
artdoc May=1991

The cases of 26 people who are presently suing the Chief Constable of
Wiltshire for assault, damage to property and false imprisonment
following events in 1985 when police stopped a convoy of vehicles trying
to reach Stonehenge, is presently being heard at Winchester Crown Court.
The Earl of Cardigan, on whose estate the convoy was parked, told
the court how police had cracked a truncheon over the head of a heavily
pregnant woman and smashed up the convoy's buses. In one incident, a
woman in an old bus picked up a baby and held the child up, indicating
to the police not to attack the bus because of the presence of young
children. A missile was thrown from the police ranks which hit the
windscreen, covering the mother and baby in broken glass. `It was
unspeakable' the Earl said. (Independent 18.10.90, Times 18.10.90, Mail
