Argues that existing sociological theory has little to offer in
explaining urban riots and looks in detail at the British
experience for some answers. Suggests that the disorder in Bristol,
Brixton, Toxteth and elsewhere is an aspect of the class struggle
based on highly complex associations between widely varying
groups. Mass unemployment may have been the flash point but the
basic struggle was between an alienated youth and society as
represented by the police.
