Examines national political party policies on the role of police
authorities and compares them with the views of members of those
authorities using data from a survey in five of them. The
policies of the Conservative Party , Alliance and Labour Party
are characterised, respectively, as retentionist, reformist and
radical. Members' views were broadly consistent with these
policies but show some important differences: Conservative
members seem unhappy with the statutory co-option of magistrates,
Alliance members do not favour an increase in the proportion of
non-elected members, and many Labour members express doubts
about the idea of local government controlling the police. 29
