resources for policing by examining the national crime problem
and its roots, and the geographical variations. Alternative
structures of authority are considered under the headings of

special problems of London policing. The section on fire
protection examines the demands on the fire services,
determination of resource needs, and local government and the
fire service. Investigates whether a national service is required
and what the optimum size should be, along with a brief note on
the problems associated with Greater London and the metropolitan
counties.
