essentials to the years immediately succeeding the Scottish
Reformation in 1560.

This volume traces through almost four hundred years the history of a
unique office which embodies the changing relationship of Church and
State in Scotland during that long period. Many consider the relationship
between the National Church of Scotland and the State to be the most
satisfactory yet devised in any country, and Mr Mechie's authoritative account
of this aspect of it will be widely welcomed.
