Looks at reasons why some demonstrations end in violence while
others remain peaceful using results from research at Sheffield
Polytechnic into crowd disorders in South Yorkshire. Key factors
include the physical setting of the demonstration, the
preparations of the police for the demonstration, their contact
with demonstration organisers, the degree of unity among the
demonstrators, their expectations in relation to violence, the
political implications of the demonstration, police tactics, and
the degree to which fundamental civil rights (perceived or real)
are challenged.
